Title: Behaviour and Filtering of Supraharmonics Generated by Grid Connected Converters in Low Voltage Grids
Topic: Power-electronic grid-connected converters are essential building blocks of modern low-voltage power systems, but they also generate high-frequency distortions known as supraharmonic emissions in the range from 2 kHz to 150 kHz. This dissertation investigates how these emissions behave when the switching frequency of converters is related to the grid frequency in different ways, and when multiple converters operate in parallel.
The research contributes in two main directions. First, it improves the understanding of supraharmonic behaviour by analysing the influence of switching-to-grid frequency ratios and by introducing new concepts such as self-induced and mutual-induced emissions. Second, it proposes and validates a novel active power filter for single-phase grid-connected inverters, designed to reduce supraharmonic emissions effectively while remaining practical for implementation. Together, these contributions support the design of future distributed energy systems with lower supraharmonic impact on power quality.
Curriculum vitae:
Abdellatif Aboutaleb received his bachelor's and master degrees from Menoufia University on 2016 and 2019 respectively with a strong background in power electronics, electrical machines and power systems. In 2022, he started his PhD at EnSy/Lemcko Ghent University, Campus Kortrijk.
His PhD research focuses on the behaviour and mitigation of supraharmonic emissions generated by grid-connected converters in low-voltage grids. During his doctoral work, he studied how switching frequency interactions shape supraharmonic emissions and developed a novel active power filter concept for their mitigation. He has authored several journal and conference publications in the field of power electronics and power quality. Recently, he joined Drive13 as an R&D Project Manager focusing on providing advanced solutions for the next generation of electric motors.
