What drives building owners and installers to choose for a heat pump? Recommendations for stimulating the adoption of heat pumps in existing houses.

UGent Researchers experienced in the promotion of sustainable behaviours and guiding society towards achieving climate neutrality, concluded their study on stimulating the adoption of heat pumps in households. They conducted semi-structured in depth interviews of house owners, heat pump installers, heat pump manufacturers and energy advisory organisations active in the region of Ghent.

The study provides insights in the factors that influence house owners in their decision to install a heat pump, as well as the factors that influence residential HVAC system installers to offer heat pumps. The customer journeys of both groups are mapped and their interactions are investigated. The study concludes with specific recommendations for the qualitative adoption of heat pumps by both target groups.

The study was conducted by Alexine Van De Weghe and Prof. Dr. Verolien Cauberghe of the Department of Communication studies, as part of a Living Lab in commission of the City of Ghent. This Living Lab brings together researchers, policy makers and sector experts to co-create solutions that support the transition to fossil-free heating in existing homes. As a practical outcome, recommendations of this study have resulted in the development of practical tools by our partners ODE Vlaanderen and De Energiecentrale of the City of Ghent, that will be launched in the Autumn of 2025.
